tfios!!

My copy of The Fault in Our Stars came in the mail today! 8D So this post is going to be correspondingly short, because I am going to read it alllllll.

There was a math final today. It was a harrowing experience that I never want to go through again, because life sucks when you know you've done poorly on a horribly difficult math final like I have. :(

There was also an APUSH final today. That wasn't so bad.

Aaaaaand now I will go back to eating grapefruit and reading TFIOS. See you.

books are yummy

I've been having the weirdest dreams lately.

Um, winter break is really stressful, so today I'm going to talk about the things I like most - BOOKS! :)

Before I start talking about my favorite books, I am going to say a few quick words about a book that I'm a bit sick of at the moment. Uncle Tom's Cabin. It does not please Virgil. It's funny how I haven't even read it.

Out of context I guess that might sound racist, but you have no idea how much I hate Uncle Tom's Cabin at the moment. I can't escape from it. It's taking over my life. Anyway, onto better books...

Right now I'm reader a book called The Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. Holy snapples this book is amazing. I am quite picky about historical fiction, mind you, so the fact that I love this book so much is a testament to how brilliantly well-written it is. It helps that it takes place among the clansmen of 18th-century Scotland and the not-so-rising of Bonnie Prince Charlie, because well, I love those guys. And it's cool how there are scenes at places like Fort William where I've actually been (whoa!) and I can picture the landscape.

Anyway, let's talk about the actual plot. It's really more of a romance between the main character, Claire Randall, and a super-hot ginger (aren't they all?) named Jamie. But she's from the 20th century and he's from the 18th's century, and even though she's in love with him she also has a husband named Frank who hasn't been born yet. It's complicated. There are other problems, like the fact that she's English (a bloody Sassenach!) and he's a Highlander, and the fact that he's an outlaw, and the fact that his enemy is Frank's ancestor who looks just like him which is weird... I won't give too much away, but there are a ton of crazy plot twists one of which involves a witch trial, and it feels like I've read a whole saga even though I'm only about 2/3 through the first book in a series of like six or seven. I'll have to restrain myself from spoiling everything that's happened so far, because you all have to read it for yourselves, especially xiy.

[Ye be warned of extremely graphic violence & sex. Just sayin'.]

Another book which I'd like to talk about: THE FAULT IN OUR STARS!! So we all know how some of the pre-orders accidentally got leaked by Barnes & Noble - fortunately I wasn't one of the lucky few, because I wouldn't have been able to resist the urge - but excepting the leak, TFIOS COMES OUT IN TWO WEEKS!! I'm more than a little excited. John Green is my most favorite author ever, and The Fault in Our Stars just seems like it's going to be amazing. Paper Towns and An Abundance of Katherines are definitely both in my top ten or fifteen favorite books of all time, and Looking for Alaska ranks in at number one. Also SINCE I PRE-ORDERED MY COPY IT'LL BE SIGNED BY J-SCRIBBLE HIMSELF!!!! Hooray :)

There are other book-related things going on in my life... like the fact that in my driver's ed class there's a group of kids from a different high school who all sit together, and they totally correspond to Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, and Seamus (there was another awkward guy who tagged along with them today and we decided that he must be Cedric Diggory. Kill the spare!). Anyways, basically I can't look over at them without laughing and they don't understand why.

Oh, and I got a book for Christmas from my parents called The Adventure of English and it's pretty awesome. I've started reading it, and it's really cool - obviously it's about the evolution of modern English, which might be a pretty dry topic no matter how interesting, but the author really makes it adventure-y. It's like, battle of the languages in the British Isles. Pretty dramatic stuff.

I was going to talk about The Hunger Games and Caleb's Crossing but I said that I would go work on NHD at 2. See ya'll.

I am reading a novel about the French Revolution,

but at the moment, I don't think it's terribly good. I am, however, only on page 76, so perhaps I should reserve further judgement until later.

The book is Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly, and apparently it's supposed to be good (this opinion originating from the letter from the publisher stuffed at the front of the book), and it's about the French Revolution and I like the French Revolution, so, hey. Maybe when it gets more into the historical bits and less about the main character angsting and angsting and angsting (and angsting and angsting and angsting). Because that's already getting really boring.

It's Carrie's birthday soon! Happy almost birthday!

Aaaaaaand ummm. There was book club today. We ate cookies and it was fun.

I think we need another theme week. I can't think of anything to really post.

So I will be taking my inspiration from Momo's "Five Ways To Start an Interesting Post," because I am unoriginal like that.

2. In elementary school, the best way to spend recess was...

On sort of rainy, drab-ish days like today (today was very rainy and very drab) when one's breath was visible in the air (the raininess and drabness hasn't quite reached that point yet), I remember we'd always play dragons and pretend to be blowing smoky water vapor and exploding things with our fiery breaths. It was really fun, and a good way to pass the time too, since on rainy days the slides would almost all be out of commission and monkey bars are no fun if one gets one's hands all wet and cold while hanging off them.

And then in winter, there would be all sorts of games along the lines of Antarctic Explorers and See How Fast We Can Pull The Sled and Dig Candy Out Of The Snow and Throw Badly-Made Snowballs At Badly-Made Snow Forts.

I miss elementary school. ):

nitwits, oddments, blubbers, and perhaps a tweak or two

SALVETE OMNES

So today I skipped fencing because I had a ton of work to do, and then when I got home, instead of starting to chip away at the mountain of homework, I: 1) ate too much food and 2) watched almost a whole hour of TV.
I have no self-control whatsoever.  *sigh* I should have gone to fencing. AND I'm supposed to be on a diet, but this stupid online health course has me so paranoid about anorexia that now I'm eating way too much. It's supposed to discourage people from becoming obsessed with their weight, but instead IT'S DOING THE EXACT OPPOSITE. How counterproductive. I just had a bowl of Ben & Jerry's, and now I feel guilty. I BLAME BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY.
So, let's see. Things that are randomly coming to my mind...
1. Bio class today was so much fun. I'm giggling just thinking about it, even though I don't remember a whole lot, because I'm pretty sure Momo and I were both on laughing gas the whole time.

2. This book that I'm reading, The Forgotten Legion, is really, REALLY good. It's quite a lot like A Game of Thrones - let's do a little comparison game, shall we? The eager English student inside of me is having a party. I really should be working on an English essay about mangoes right now, but whatever, this is more fun.
Similarities between TFL and GoT:
1. They both have alternating perspectives between different characters of contrasting status, who may or may not be on opposing sides of the same conflict and/or have stories that somewhere link together or will link together in the future.
2. They both have a lot of political themes involved.
3. They are both written by military-tactics-nerds.
4. They both involved the objection of women in the form of both a) rape and b) prostitution.
5. They both contain a lot of blood.
6. They are both really great books.

Difference between TFL and Got:
1. The Forgotten Legion is historical fiction, wheres A Game of Thrones is (as far as we know) completely fantasy.
2. A Game of Thrones took me over a month to read, whereas it's only been a couple days with TFL and I'm about halfway done.

It's interesting how these days we are (or, at least, I am) entertained by the violence, sex, and politics (I feel like these three things go together) of civilizations that either never existed or haven't existed in centuries. Is it some sort of fascination with pain? Does it make our own lives seem better in comparison when we're reading about the depressing lives of characters who face terrible situations, half of whom are enslaved? I don't know about you guys, but reading about Daenerys getting raped or Fabiola getting sold to a brothel really puts my own problems into perspective. OH MY GOODNESS I GOT A BAD GRADE ON THE APUSH ESSAY, WHAT ON EARTH AM I GOING TO DO WITH MY LIFE? Maybe that's why I love reading Harry Potter so much - his life sucks.

Don't judge me because I read just to make myself feel better about my own life, because that isn't even true. But I would be lying if I said that it wasn't one of the many reasons.

*sigh*
I salute you if you actually read my little train-of-consciousness post. It probably makes no sense.

DFTBA,

Friday, July 29, 2011

So I made another banner yesterday because I was bored and making stuff in Gimp is apparently what I do when I'm bored (that and because it was really humid and sticky and gross out yesterday and there were no really good places to sit and read without getting one's skin stuck to the surface one was trying to relax on and read). It is hanging quite beautifully up on the top of the blog now. I do realize that the last one wasn't up for very long, but the fact that it wasn't quite centered always annoyed me, which is one of the reasons why I made this new banner. But if you prefer, I could put up the other one. :)

Sunday will be Harry Potter's birthday! He's going to be, what, thirty-two years old now (please correct me if I'm wrong)?

Aaaaaaand there's not really much else (my posts are getting shorter and shorter, aren't they?) to say. I'm reading I Shall Wear Midnight by Terry Pratchett, which is a very good book. I recommend you read it.

Oh, and I drew a picture, though I think I went overboard with the textures; it looks a bit funny and kind of too lens-flare-y and bright.

Tock, Rhyme, Reason, Milo, and the Humbug, in that order.
Yeah. I hope you had a nice Friday.

Book Tuesday!!!! (I'm Old Gregg!!!)

<< VERY IMPORTANT UPDATE THAT ALSO INVOLVES BOOKS!!!
JOHN GREEN HAS ANNOUNCED THE TITLE OF HIS NEW NOVEL, "THE FAULT IN OUR STARS"!!!!
AND HE'S SIGNING ALL OF THE PREORDER COPIES!!!
I MADE A COVER AND POSTED IT IN YOUR PANTS, HERE IT IS:

THAT IS ALL. CONTINUE READING THE POST AS USUAL.

Today, I am going to talk about books. But before I do that, I have to get something off my chest.

16 DAYS UNTIL HARRY POTTER
**HYPERVENTILATES**
OH MY ROWLING
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN
HARRY POTTER SHALL NEVER ENDDD
**dies**

Okay, okay. I'll try to breathe normally. But while I'm on the topic of OMG HARRY POTTER, I'm going to talk about Pottermore. OH WAIT. There isn't anything to talk about because nobody has any idea what Pottermore is!! Grrr >.< That announcement video was so vague. She just went up and was like, "This is going to be a brand-new online experience internet thingy that has something to do with the eBooks and you're all going to love it and OMG LOOK THERE'S AN OWL GO FOLLOW IT!!!" I'm not saying that I'm not excited to find out more, because I'm really pumped for whatever Jo is throwing at us. I'm just annoyed because the way it's presented, it makes it look like the whole thing is explained, when really it just raises more questions about what this thing really is.
I just hope it doesn't cost money.

Go watch Alex Day's video "What the f-ck is Pottermore?" on YouTube. He agrees with me.

Okay, now I'll move onto the actual post. First things first: theme song time!!
La la la la, la la la la, Virgil's world! La la la la, la la la la, Virgil's world! Virgil loves Reading Camp, and APUSH too! That's Virgil's worrrllddd!!!

I have a lot to talk about, but all of the various subjects are related because they all involve BOOKS!!

NUMBER ONE:
I am reading A LOT of books right now. I don't even know how this happened. I'll list them in no particular order:
Shipbreaker Paolo Bacigalupi - okay, I actually just finished this one the other day, so it's not really current. It was recommended by Hank Green in a video a few months ago and I just got around to reading it. A bit more YA-ish than I normally prefer, but it was really good and had some really interesting world-building.
The Moses Quest by Will Adams - really good so far, but I've just started it, so I haven't formed an opinion yet.
Academ's Fury by Jim Butcher - The second book in a series called "The Codex Alera." JIMBUTCHERJIMBUTCHERJIMBUTCHER AHHHHHH
Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson - I've never read any of her stuff before, so I found this and started it, but then I kind of put it down and didn't pick it up again. But I'm still technically in the middle of reading it, and I still plan on finishing it. Eventually.
The Aeneid by Me - just rereading my own work. You know how it is. Always room for improvement!
Reading Like a Writer by Francine Prose - it's just so totally awesome that she's a writer and her last name is "Prose." That just blows my mind.
I Am America (And So Can You) by Stephen Colbert - I love this guy. He's hilarious. And totally not a liberal... ;)
The American Pageant - lol no comment. I finished the first chapter today!!

NUMBER TWO:
Reading Camp was amazing!!! My kids were great, and they all improved so much! It's awesome to see how much of a difference a little bit of one-on-one attention can do for a kid's reading skills, and also just overall confidence. They all grew so much over the course of one week, and I am so proud. It was really hard work, and I got no sleep at all, and one of my campers wet the bed and I had to do the laundry which was NOT FUN, and I got eaten alive by mosquitoes, but everything was worth it. I also bonded with the other counselors. We had a blast during our time off (which was like 9:30 pm onwards every night) and we spent the wee hours of the morning watching YouTube videos, eating junk food, giving each other straddle-massages (because any sense of decency disappears when you're at camp), attempting to free-draw maps of Africa, and playing Connect Four.

I love Reading Camp. :)

Have any of you seen the YouTube video called Old Gregg? Don't look it up. This is a cult that you DON'T want to be in.
At first I thought it was a sea anemone... the second half of this quote isn't appropriate for the 6LCF blog

NOO DON'T GO LOOK IT UP ON YOUTUBE IT'LL SCAR YOU FOR LIFE I SWEAR!!!
do it.
NUMBER THREE:
I swear I had a number three, but now I've forgotten what it was.

Okay, that is all.

Best wishes!

One Day More!

One day more! Another day, another destiny. This never-ending road to Calvary;
These men who seem to know my crime,Will surely come a second time.
One day more!
~Jean Valjean, "Les Miserables" (the musical)

This quote is quite fitting for today's post, because:
1. The Six Little Curly Fries have a grand total of 1 more day of school (excluding finals) and
2. I have a recent obsession with Les Miserables.
But I'm getting ahead of myself - theme song time!!!
La la la la, la la la la, Virgil's world! La la la la, la la la la, Virgil's world! Virgil loves the summer, and Les Mis too! That's Virgil's woooooorrrrrrrllllldddd!!!!

So yeah, ONE DAY MORE!! I'm not one of those people who really despises school, but it's time for it to end, and for summer vacation frivolity to begin! It's too hot to be in school now. We should have ended like a week ago, but I'll survive.

The Memorial Day parade was yesterday, and the 4BandCF were all bustin' our butts out there in the sun. God, it was like ninety degrees. I died. >.< The clarinets were always on the wrong foot.... MOMO!!!
Lol jk. I didn't see if Momo was on the right (that would be LEFT!) foot.
I finished reading Les Miserables yesterday, and IT WAS LIFE-ALTERING. Like seriously, this is the best book I've ever read since Looking for Alaska (that excludes all the Harry Potter rereads, mind you). I saw the musical a couple months ago, and I thought it was amazing, but the book has so much more of an intricate plot that isn't even touched on in the show! Marius especially has a lot more depth & backstory than what is conveyed in the musical. Marius & Cosette 4 ever - officially my new favorite pairing of all time!

Also, there was all that forgiveness/redemption/Jesus-y message, but I won't talk about it.
Silver candlesticks! Best symbolism ever? Yessssssssssss. <3 the bishop
Speaking of books, THE WARLOCK CAME OUT LAST WEEK!!! I still haven't read it, though - I'd like to finish rereading the series before I read the next installment, because I want to completely understand what is going on. Needless to say, I am SO PUMPED to read Scott's new book. Freaking DANU TALIS. The end of The Necromancer was such a killer. The two that are one, the one that is all. And there's only going to be one more book after this one, and then the series will be over! :( I'll need to find another fantasy series to cling to... *sigh* (little voice: maybe Virgil will stop reading YA fantasy novels? Virgil: NEVERR!!!)

Speaking of books, I recently reached like 16k on my current writing project. That might not sound like a lot to NaNoWriMo-ing people, but I value this 16k over both 50k novels of November '09 and '10 combined, because they are (in my humble opinion) good quality words. I kind of hope that I finish it before June 30th because that's the deadline for my Createspace coupon (from Nano '10 winner goodies) but I might not be done by then, so we'll see.

That's about it. XD lots of happiness in Virgil's life right now! Yippee!!
 Best wishes :)

♫~

pffft. I'm tired, which isn't good, but I also have practically no homework (barring 9HD and possibly an English project), which is.

House and I have been raiding the school library's supply of old card-catalog cards; since technology has apparently made old-fashioned things of that nature obsolete, the librarians have helpfully put out the old cards in little baskets dotted in convenient places around the library for students to use as notecards.

Or, of course, said students can also conduct giggly, daring raids of the baskets to pick and choose which particularly interesting/amusing/weird/nostalgic cards they'd like to keep for themselves forever and ever.

(Interestingly, some of the titles listed can be made into amazingly dirty jokes with the addition of the ever-wonderful phrase in your pants.)

So I have a card listing Roald Dahl's The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More, which is an awesome, beautiful book that took me about two or three re-reads in fourth grade to understand properly. I recommend you reading it as soon as humanly possible.

In other news, the Six Little Curly Fries One-Year (woot) Anniversary is coming up. It's quite exciting, really. I don't think any of us expected to last this long. But we did. :D

Here's a bit of the extra-special one-year banner:

I think I'm getting better at colouring things.
That's it for today, I think.

(Scary fencing eleven-year-olds are scary.)

Too Much Homework. . . x.X

The xiy that is typing this post is a reincarnation of a previous xiy, who died tragically while trying to complete the overwhelming amount of homework she was given today.

Haha, just kidding. But I did get tons of homework today, which explains the reason I'm posting later than I usually do. Not that it's really *that* late, but still.

Well, the whole reincarnated-me thing reminds me of this one book, Kraken, and since I've got nothing better to do than complain about my workload, I shall explain why reincarnation reminded me of it.

Kraken is a novel by China Mieville, and in it there's this character (I forget the name) who can teleport things by breaking them up into tiny pieces and then putting the pieces back together at the other end (apparently, this is reminiscent of Star Trek, although I don't know anything about that). However, the catch is that if he tries to transport living things, the process of breaking-up actually kills the living thing, and then the putting-back-together sort of clones them. It's a totally new them at the other end, but with the same memories and everything, so you can't tell the difference. But, in essence, they died and were reborn.
So the teleporting guy has teleported himself many times before, and it's come to the point that there's a ton of vengeful ghosts of past hims who are all very, very angry.
[By the way, teleporting-guy is not a main character, but it's totally cool and weird all the same.]

So, yeah.

Vote in our Norse-mythology book poll! Currently, D'Aulaires' Book of Norse Myths, Gods and Heroes from Viking Mythology, and Favorite Norse Myths are all tied for first place with three votes each. The Usborne Illustrated Guide to Norse Myths and Legends only has one vote.

I made a 6LCF banner over the weekend.
Isn't it pretty?
Yeah, that's about it. NaNoWriMo's in one month and sixteen days! :D I've got a few chapters outlined and a lot of the backstory, so I'm pretty much all set. I'd be happier if my characters were out of hibernation, but I suppose there's plenty of time to wake them up before November.

Happy Tuesday!

Book Club Choices

Okay, guys. We really need to get started on our 6LCF book club. After doing a Google search on "Norse mythology for children," I have found the following books.

Curly Fries, vote either in the comments or on this post itself; readers, if you so wish, vote in the comments, please. We'd love to hear your feedback! <3
ACTUALLY, nevermind about voting in comments. I'll just make a poll. (*feels stupid* >.<)
If you want to vote in the comments, go ahead, but make sure to choose the two you want in the poll.
Suggestions will still go in the comments, 'kay?

D'Aulaires' Book of Norse Myths [amazon info]
Apparently, the d'Aulaires have written other books on mythology and other things, and I like the illustrations. Pic of the book cover in the link.

Gods and Heroes from Viking Mythology [amazon info
It's technically "young adult" and there's 152 pages, but there seem to be a lot of illustrations (well, it says "full color" in the description, whatever that means). The one review of it on Amazon is four stars, so it seems okay. Pic of book cover in link.

The Usborne Illustrated Guide to Norse Myths and Legends [amazon info]
I don't like the cover illustration at all; it's a bit overdone and just sort of ickily green. It's a short book--only 48 pages--so I guess some of the lazy people in our group (*coughthepeoplewhoaretoolazytomake6LCFvideosevenwhenwe'reallinthesameplacecough*) won't have to exert themselves overmuch to get through it.

Favorite Norse Myths [amazon info]
I like the paintings in this book, from what I've seen of them. There aren't pictures *everywhere*, but the ones that are there are really good. It's 87 pages and 14 myths.

--
There are lots more--just go on Google/Amazon and start searching "Norse mythology for children" and you'll get tons. It's silly to list them all, so I just stuck with four.
If any of you, Curly Fries or readers, have any extra books you think would be good for the topic [that being "a children's book of Norse mythology with lots of pictures"], please tell in the comments.

For now, choose two books maximum; then, if there's too close of a competition, we narrow it down to the top two and then choose again.

Voting closes in two weeks; that should be enough time.

Hi! Hi! Hi! :D
I had a most wonderful birthday on Saturday, courtesy of the Curly Fries. Thank you all, for coming and making it awesome!

Anyway, today, I would like to talk about. . . Hrm. I'm actually not quite sure what I'm going to talk about.
Well, for one, school starts in exactly a week. There goes summer. It's been a really great vacation this year; summer didn't pass too quickly, which is good.
I've also been writing the sequel to my NaNoWriMo novel, since it's not November yet so I can't actually write the first book. It's been going quite swimmingly. I am a very mean author. I like heaping misfortune on the characters; it's fun. ^.^
(House and Carrie, you two should totally do NaNo! It'll be fun!)

Also, I finally finished The Silmarillion yesterday. For those who don't know, The Silmarillion is, like, the prequel to Lord of the Rings. It tells about the stuff that happened in Middle-Earth in (mostly) the First Age, with a bit about the Second Age and then a summary of the Third Age (and it very, very briefly goes through the events of LotR at the very end). You don't necessarily even have to read LotR to understand any of the stuff in the Silmarillion, since it's a prequel.
After reading it, I've got, like, a much better idea of what the heck happened in LotR; before, I was just like, "Okay, who is this person?!"
The one bad part is that practically all the main characters die in it, which really sucks.
There's also this fanfiction called "The Silmarillion Gospel," by Araloth the Random. It's what would happen if the Silmarillion (which is already written like a myth) was turned into Biblical English by a bunch of fangirls. It's hilarious, and one of the rather few good fics on ff.net. Go read it! You won't regret it, I promise.
I recommend this book for Book Club. It's a bit confusing at the beginning, but it's really, really good by the end.
Please? :3

That's more or less it for today, the 102nd post.
(Oh, and there's going to be a 6LCF all-nighter on Friday! Woot!)

Summer Reading on a Lazy Friday Day (Fridayday? lol what?)

"You could paint your history over any way you like, but you'd always see those first few brushstrokes."
—Jodi Picoult's Handle with Care

Hello. Again. [And again and again...]

Well... what's been up with me lately? Hm... let's see. I'm back at my summer house, though I won't be here tomorrow. Right now, I'm watching NCIS, but I haven't been paying attention to the plot, so I don't really get what's up. The chick with the black pony tails and bangs and gothic kinda look is talking.

I've been doing a lot of reading lately. Our school has required us to read at least one of two books this summer, one of them being My Sister's Keeper (by Jodi Picoult), which is the one I read. I really liked it, so I went to the library to get out another one of hers, Handle with Care. The only things I didn't like were (1) I didn't find the voices of each character to be that diverse, (2) The ending wasn't called for, and (3) It was pretty much the exact same story as My Sister's Keeper, except with different words and names and diseases. But I really like her writing style and stuff personally ^_^

Anyway.
I've been reading a lot, which has got me thinking about that book club thing we thought of starting forever ago... remember that, yeah? :)

It's nice here. The weather's let up nicely, so I can sit on the beach and read my books.

1) Book club. Are we doing this, or what? School's starting soon. We might not have time then, what with homework and stuff. You know.
2) Lynda's punishment. I think we're waiting until she's back to decide, but what's up...? (Apparently, Virgil's got some ideas...)
3) No, really. How's your summer going? ^_^
4) Bleh, we're going back to school so soon... [Statement as a question, yeah. Chill.]

With all due respect,
House

GAAAH the HEAT! >.<;;

Hello there. How's life? [Oh, and happy Tuesday.]
Me? Ah, well. Life's okay, but I am not a fan of this weather. Today the temperature's supposed to be around 92F (for all the cool people who use metric/Celsius, that would be around 33C--I did that conversion in my head; be PROUD that my math skills haven't totally atrophied yet). Anything higher than 85F I don't like at all. 'S too hot
And there's no AC in my house, so I have to make do with ceiling fans. *Sigh*
*melts into a puddle of goo*
*reforms*

Yesterday, my family and Lynda's family went to the beach (it was a lake, not an ocean; just clearing that up). It was quite fun. We went in the afternoon, so the heat wasn't as bad (and, anyway, once you get into the water everything's nice and peachy). My dad got sunburned anyway, though. Heh. We also made this sand-fort-castle thingy at the very end; it's probably gone by now.
And I learned that my little sister is scared of large expanses of water. And she won't step on sand. Babies are funny creatures, aren't they.

In other news, I do believe that House has gone to camp by now. :( If so, there are now only four (4) Curly Fries left posting until at least mid-July, possibly even early/mid-August [I'm not too well-versed in the various schedules of the Curly Fries. Forgive me]. So, for all you readers excited for our book club (if anybody other than the 6LCF is reading this, please drop us a note in the comments? Even if it's just something like "hi there. bye," at least we know people are reading this), it won't be up 'til then.
Oh, and my birthday (August 14) is one month and eight days away! Woot! *eagerly begins countdown*

I requested a book called Kraken from the library ages ago, and I finally picked it up on Saturday (the book just came out). It's by China Mieville (there should be an accent aigu over the "e"); I really like his books, from the three I've read. I've gotten about one-fourth of the way through the book, and it's good, if weird. Oh, and the book uses British spellings; Virgil should be happy to hear that.
To sum up what's happened:
There's this giant squid in the British Museum that got stolen, and the curator, Billy Harrow, has no idea what's going on. Meanwhile, the police, a gang, and a cult devoted to the squid (the "Church of the Kraken," or something like that) are all looking for it, and Billy gets caught up in everything. And he still has more or less no idea what's going on. ^.^ Oh, and the squid/kraken's appearance/disappearance could just possibly signal the end of the world. Whee.
There's magic involved in the book, though it's all very modern (iScry FTW!).
So, yeah, xiy likes the book very much. The book makes xiy happy.

[Oh, wait. Questions...]
1) Which is better: French or Latin?
2) When is your birthday (you only have to give the date)?
3) Would you rather be too hot or too cold?
4) Do you use metric on a daily basis?
5) What's your favorite flavor of ice cream?
6) What's the formula for converting Fahrenheit to Celsius?
     Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Erm, that should be it for this Tuesday, July 6, 2010 (one month and eight days until August 14!!).
Please continue to have a good day; don't let me ruin it or anything.

Cordially,
xiy

Rubik's Cubes & Related Topics

Arr, hello there mateys! Step aboard the Good Ship Virgil! All ashore who's goin' ashore!
*cue theme music* La la la la, la la la la, Virgil's World! La la la la, la la la la, Virgil's World! Virgil loves Tom Felton and pirates too! That's Virgil's whhhirrled! *end theme music*
(In case you haven't noticed, I'm a pirate today. I'll explain that later. Arrr.)
*
Philosophical Statement of the Day:
It recently occurred to me that life is like a Rubik's Cube. I'm not entirely sure how/why, but I intend to find out.
*
Now, onto more important business. I just discovered (and by "just" I literally mean, like, two seconds ago) that the name "Virgil" anagrams to "Girl VI" which is so jokes because I'm the sixth girl to post on this blog every week. Of course, it also anagrams to "Girl IV" but that's not nearly as jokes, because I'm not the fourth one to post.
As you probably know, today is Saturday, June 19th, 2010. That means that yesterday was Friday, June 18th, 2010. Do you know what that means? THE WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER OFFICIALLY OPENED YESTERDAY!! (House failed to mention this in her post.) AND I GET TO GO THERE IN LESS THAN A MONTH. ARRRR LUDI ARRRR (The "AHHH LUDI AHHH" is changed today because I am a pirate. Arrr.)(Even though ninjas are still way more awesome.) I watched the grand opening on Mugglenet, and a ton of the stars from the movies were there, including Tom Felton (he plays Draco Malfoy, for those of you who don't know) whom I plan on marrying someday. I haven't told him yet, though. Us folks on the Dark Side may have lied about the cookies, but we have him, so it's all good.

Speaking of the Dark Side, the other day I saw a flair on facebook that said something like, "Come to the darkside - we have Snape. Oh wait, no we don't. Oh wait, yes we do. No, we don't. Yes, we do. Oh, just... never mind." It made me smile. =D

I'm listening to some songs from that band House mentioned called A Rocket to the Moon. They're quite good.
(Oh dear, I must work on this whole segway-into-another-topic thing. You see, in writing, you can just start another chapter. Maybe I should start dividing posts into chapters so that it will be easier to randomly switch topics. I'll just slide in a little asterisk and hope nobody notices.)
*
I leave for Reading Camp tomorrow!! I'm very excited, because I get to learn how to read... haha no. Actually, I'm a junior counselor - the campers are younger kids who live in the inner city, and they are at least a year behind where they should be in terms of reading level, if not more. The camp is PIRATE THEMED, and we had a counselor meeting today, so we were all getting into the pirate spirit. Arr. So yeah, it should be fun. I'll have no access to a computer all week (it's an overnight camp), so don't be offended if I don't comment on anybody's posts. It's not because I don't like you. I should be able to fulfill my Curly Fry duties next Saturday, though.
*
I was creeping on Momo's YouTube channel last night and I saw a little birthday message to me. (Was I supposed to not watch it? Er...) Momo, you're a sweetie. And I liked your diva disguise.

*Question Time!!*
1) Translate: Arrr arr yo-ho arr swashbuckling arrr mateys... ahoy!
2) What does your name anagram to?
3) Have you ever read Looking for Alaska?
4) Do you think it would be cool for us to have a 6LCF book club - like, we could all read the same book and then like... discuss it? It could be open to other people who read the blog too (are ya there?).
5) All in favour say "aye" all opposed say "nay."
6) I nominate Looking for Alaska for our first book! All in favour say "aye," all opposed say "nay."
7) Is there a different book you would like to nominate?

DFTBA,
PDBAZ,
Peace, Love, & Otters,

Virgil

P.S. Even though some of us won't be here, I think we should still do a collab post for Father's Day, k?

What time is it? Summer TIME!!!!

WOOHOOO!!! IT'S SUMMER!!!! VACATION!!! TODAY WAS OUR LAST half DAY OF SCHOOL!!! We all dressed up prettily, and graduated...*sniff sniff* we're all going to different colleges....I'll miss y'all! JK, we're only going into high school... After the "promotion ceremony"/"Recognition Ceremony", we walked to J.Pistone's and ate lunch; afterward, we went to Virgil's house. Tomorrow, we're going to a fun place called....Cedar Point [an amusement park]!! I'm not going to be able to do much, since I am terrified of roller coasters, though I can't wait for the water rides, they should be fun. As I think today is too big of a day for me to write alone (we're high-schoolers now!), I now ordain this as a collaborative post.
P.S. Today, I finished My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. I love to read, and Jodi Picoult is an awesome author. The book is soooooo sad...I cried, and so my mascara ran, and now I have long black streaks going down my cheek *sigh*
P.P.S. The title was inspired by High School Musical 2. It fits beautifully, we're going into high school, and it's summer!
P.P.P.S. Oops!! I forgot my questions! Thank you Momo!
1. If you were a butterfly, what colors would you be?
2. What type of fruit do you think I, Lynda, am?
3. Turn to whoever, and whatever is next to you, what is it? (Please don't say "air", "space", "oxygen", etc.)
4. Have you ever read a Jodi Picoult book, if so, which do you like the best?
Luv, Lynda
Lynda: I've already written, as this is technically my post, and a collaborative post...I'm allowed to do that right?
Virgil: I am so glad that it's finally summer :) this year has gone by so fast yet not fast enough. The amusement park was fun. (I'm adding this on Saturday because I'm a bum and forgot to check the blog yesterday and the day before that.) Lynda, you didn't specify what you wanted me to write about, so...uh, questions. 1) see-through sparkle rainbow 2) a pineapple 3) My big sister is sitting at her computer right there <--- 4) I think the only one I've ever read is My Sister's Keeper and I thought that it was very good.
House:

Momo: Haha! I'm the first to write (besides Lynda)!!! I am super duper excited for the amusement park tomorrow! I guess I'm also pretty pumped that we're done with school too though.... Um, Lynda didn't quite specify what we were supposed to write about...so I'm a little at a loss. I read  My Sister's Keeper a while back and it was soooo good! I also love Jodi Picoult and have read, like, 9 of her books. I don't think I cried at the end...maybe teary-eyed but it was a given that someone would die...no spoilers. Okay. That's all. [Lynda forgot to ask a question!!!!!]
xiy: My Sister's Keeper wasn't that bad. I did cry a tiny tiny bit at the end, after a certain somebody dies, but that's it. It was a good book. Handle With Care was a good one as well.
Yeah, happy summer! Cedar Point should be fun. Four of the curly fries aren't the biggest fans of roller coasters (though House'll go on the middling-dangerous-looking-ones), so we'll watch Momo and Virgil scream as they go on the really high, really scary one (i.e., the "Top Thrill Dragster"). I really don't have terribly much to say, except that I do kind of miss middle school already, in a kind of warped way. I'll miss a lot of my teachers, though some *coughcoughMrs."Land"coughcough* I won't miss at all.
Whee, high school. Here's to hoping we'll all make it out okay.
...By the way, Lynda dearest, whenever did you get mascara?
Carrie: Oh my, now I have HSM 2 stuck in my head...Anyhoo, Yay!!!! SUMMER! Here's my small list of things I plan on accomplishing 1) Finish The Odyssey  2) Sleep. 3) Prepare for my exciting and thrilling trip through high school. 4)  sleep some more 5) Do some other stuff... So far, my first and a half days of summer have been ok. Maybe yesterday wasn't the best (I was really out of it....) but I still had fun, and today has been ok. The rest will just keep getting better. (: SUMMMERRRRISHEREEEE!!!! *starts jumping up and down* okey dokey. Well, that is all I have to say. Have a nice day. (heh, I did not mean for that to rythm.)
