"I'm not worried about a damn thing." —My grandfather (Papa)
Ahh, I walked around all day being like, "Hm.. it's Friday. That's nice." I sat down at the computer and looked at the screen, and the little thingy at the top of my monitor was all like, "Fri 7:00 PM," and I was like "Frickkkkk."
So anyway.
Happy Friday. I guess I don't have much to tell you... the only thing I suppose is notable is that I'm not where I am when I usually write up my posts; I'm at my summer house. So, yeah.
Oh, wait. Yes, I do have something to tell you:
Momo and Virgil often criticize me for being too bossy (teehee), and yeah, they're a bit right. But I'm usually what makes stuff get done, I guess. Or whatever. Anyway. Last frikkin forever ago, Virgil proposed the idea of a book club reading group thingy that we could do. And I think that's a fantastic idea, and the other Curly Fries seem to like the idea quite a bit, too ("AWESOME!!"), so I think we should do it. And getting us started, I guess, will be the theme for my questions [except the last one, that is].
1) Do you like the idea of us forming a little book club thingy?
2) Do you have any particular book[s] that you think we should read?
3) How should we go about discussion etc.?
4) What is your favourite book genre/type of book?
5) What is your least favourite book genre/type of book?
6) What book length are you comfortable with?
7) Do you have access to a library or somewhere else where you would have access to a lot lot lot of books that we might read for our club, in the case that we can not [for whatever reason] borrow from each other? [Just checking.]
8) Yes or no: Should we start off with a book we've pretty much all read and discussed already? (i.e. something like a John Green book)*
9) In our case, "Curly Fry" or "Curly Fries" is a proper noun, right? ("Hello, my name is Lynda, and I am one of the Curly Fries."/"This weekend, the Curly Fries went on a wonderful adventure through the streets of Venice.")
^ANSWER THESEEEEEE, PLEASE AND THANK YOUUUUU :)
With all due respect,
House
*Virgil's kinda already asked this, and the group has given a pretty negative response (because we've pretty much already dissected it over our lunch period), but I'm just checking.

...Why am I almost always the first commenter? :|
ReplyDeleteAnyway,
1) Heck, yes.
2) Well, there's this really, REALLY good book I've been reading called *Thirteen Reasons Why*. It's about how this girl, Hannah Baker, commits suicide (and that's a known fact at the beginning, so that's not a spoiler) and mails 13 tapes before she dies to the thirteen people who are involved in eventually making her commit suicide. It's told in the point of view of this guy named Clay, who was one of the people who received the tapes.
It's a really good book, and not very long--I finished it in an afternoon--but it's got a lot to discuss in it.
(By the way, I made us follow the blog of the author, Jay Asher.)
3) We could post about it on Sundays. We could read 1/3 (or any fraction, or maybe, say, fifty pages) of the book a week, and then post our reactions/etc. on Sundays. Somebody could also post some structured questions too, if they wish.
4) Fantasy, definitely. But most definitely not anything to do with the "paranormal romance" genre. And I'm picky about my fantasy as well. It can't be derivative crap; it actually has to be original and entertaining.
5) Erm... Bad fantasy. Chick-flick type books.
6) Any!
7) Yup. But I usually only can go on weekends.
8) Naaah.
9) Er, sure.
My, House! You have lotsa questions! And a summer house? Where is it? Gosh, I wish I had one...is there A/C??? I NEEED AC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDelete1.Well dur!
2...Anne McCaffrey books (any of 'em, they're a series so...gosh...)<-actually no, why not the Temeraire series? Those are good, and I haven't read all of 'em yet! Or, this Jodi Picoult book called...ahh...Picture Perfect? I think, though any of her books would be good, Sarah Dessen too. And maybe...ya know what? I'll just leave it at that
3.No. NOT Sundays. Sundays are for BIG IMPORTANT HOLIDAY/EMERGENCY/NEWS stuff! Why not on every week on like...Friday? That way, you can get the book over the weekend, and read it! + you don't have to bug your mom about going to the library on weekdays...though, ahh, maybe Mondays would be better. We only go to the library on Tuesdays. Every other week would do well(just in case some people *cough, me* can't get it that week...
4.Fantasy!!! And yes, nothing crappy like twilight.
5.I don't really have a genre...actually Non-Fic is BAAAD, I do have a hated series though...(xiy, you knew this was coming) A Song of Ice and Fire. NO FRICKIN' WAY AM I GOING TO READ THOSE BORING PIECES OF CRAP! In my opinion at least.
6.long. No little tiny chapter books. the only reason I hated that book Sounder, and Aquamarine, The Old Man and the Sea, and lotsa other books were because they were thin little wafer sized books.
7.Well, I think I kinda explained that. Yes, a library, on Tuesdays, usually.
8.NO!
9.Should I feel honored you used my name? Why did you use my name? Ah well. Well, dur again!
@Lynda: ASOIAF may be boring (to some people, at any rate; I think they're awesome), but they are NOT "pieces of crap." They're certainly long, but the research is done well.
ReplyDelete1)Yes! It was my idea, after all.
ReplyDelete2)Well I first suggested Looking for Alaska, but I suppose you guys are right that we have kind of dissected it over lunch, so I dunno. How about a Jodi Picoult book? Not My Sister's Keeper, because that's required reading for our school next year and we are therefore bound by law not to read it, but maybe another one of her books. They grapple with some pretty big issues that would be fun to discuss. Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel would be cool, too. Oh wait I have a better idea... THE HOLY BIBLE!
3)As I have suggested on our mass facebook message, I think we should just have a separate page in which we can post any day we want.
4)I am not a genre racist! (hehe)
5)Hmm, I just said that I'm not a genre racist, but I'll answer this one anyways. I dislike those kinds of mystery books in which everybody is stuck inside a mansion/island/other and they all have to figure out whodunnit. When there are like twenty main characters, there's no room for character development at all, and character development is my favourite aspect of novels in general. I also don't usually read non-fiction for fun, even though it can be interesting. Historical fiction is better.
6)Any length is fine, as long as it's long enough to have some legitimate plot and development. Most of the books I read are between 300 and 800 pages. Actually I spent the entirety of last week reading books that were like eight pages long, but that's another story. I'll talk about Reading Camp when I write my post.
7)Mhm.
8)See #2
9)Yes. When are we going to Venice?
I'd like to add that I think we should wait until everybody's back in town until we start this little endeavor, (So basically, like... mid-August) just because I don't want anybody to be left out.
P.S. House I thought you were already at Chinese camp...? I guess I just assumed that it was the same weeks as the German one. When are you leaving?
@xiy: You're the first to comment because you check the most often. And you're pretty much the most awesome.
ReplyDelete@Lynda: Yes, we have AC here, thank goodness. It was, like, 90 degrees yesterday >.< (And idk. I tried to think of a random Curly Fry to use as an example, and I was like "Lynda!")
@Virgil: 1) We are not. Reading. The Bible. No. Uh uh. 2) That's a good idea, waiting for everyone to get back. Smart. 3) I'm at my summer house right now; I left about the time Momo [and, uh... E.] left for camp. They go 4 weeks; I go 2. I leave for camp July... fifth, I think. 3) The Venice thing was an example. Had to come up with something.
@ HOuse, I believe, that we are all awesome. So, uh, that thing about xiy being the most awesome is wrong. WRONG! Besides, I check the blog a LOT, but my timing is always off! grr
ReplyDeleteI'm quite jealous. If I knew where you were, I might become a burglar, and steal your whole AC system if I had a huge truck to hold it in, a lotta tools, and lots of pink fluffy earmuffs.
Oh, ah...@Virgil, hist. fiction is really good!
